Happy birthday Mary Mapes Dodge who
was born today, January 26th, in 1831. Mary wrote one of my
childhood favorites, Hans Brinker, or the
Silver Skates. Have you read it? Her novel, published in 1865, became an
instant bestseller and is considered a children’s classic. The endearing tale
of Hans, the young Dutch boy with wooden skates who yearns to win the annual
skating race prize of silver skates, was later adapted for film and television.
By now
everyone has heard about the blizzard that hit the East coast this past weekend
and how all the shelves were cleared of bread and milk. Did you know that
libraries also experienced an increased number of checkouts in anticipation of
the storm? I can’t think of a better way to ride out a blizzard than cozying up
with a good book and apparently quite a few others thought so too. Cecil County
Public Library in Maryland even went so far as to post a weather map on their
website.
Weather events that come with
enough warning are an excellent opportunity for libraries to pull books and set
up a display with featured titles. What books do you think would make a great
blizzard read? Do you want to read a story about winter survival or a novel set
in a warmer climate?
